I can imagine, if the dress rehearsal yesterday is any indication, that the performances of Natalie Dessay (left) and Jonas Kaufmann in the Lyric's Manon will be remembered for many years. These two magnetic performers are so utterly committed to what they are doing that one is transported to a different place, and life as we know it is suspended for the time being. Wonderful - and that is what one longs for and so so rarely encounters. This must be sold out in due course - so go for the tickets now.
After that everything pales - but we had an enjoyable dinner party at home yesterday evening with four new board members. That was a good way for them to get to know each other somewhat - there are few enough occasions for that. And it was good to see them put yet another precious evening aside for COT business - such as it was. It was really just fun!
Today is another busy day - internal meetings for much of the morning following breakfast with my Board president at The Original Pancake House, on Bellevue here in Chicago. Good change of place!
