I will be at the Met on Monday evening to see the second performance of Robert Lepage's production of Berlioz's Damnation de Faust. It opens this evening.
There is an appetite stimulating piece in the NYT this morning about the production, and it includes an engaging slide show and commentary about the unusual elements in this production. For me this is a particularly appealing opportunity. I persuaded Robert to do his very first opera production for me in Toronto in 1993 - and the result was the trremendously successful Bartok/Schoenberg double bill that is still going the rounds 15 years later. And we did speak about two other possible projects - Damnation and the Ring. Well here is Damnation, and his Ring will turn up at last at the Met in a couple of years.
I will be in NY for three days, then to New Haven for a day for auditions at Yale, and then to Boston. So this is a week away from the office - a regular routine for me in November.
