We spent this afternoon at the Harris with the San Francisco Ballet's so called program A. And tomorrow we will be there for B which will include Mark Morris' Joyride (seen left) to a score by John Adams.
This afternoon was one of undiluted pleasure with three excellent pieces by the company's long time Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson, Christopher Wheeldon and Jorma Elo. Each displayed the talents of the dancers from all over the world who have been attracted to this wonderful company. It is a real treat to have them here for these few days in Chicago. The company also displayed the outstanding quality of the Harris as a place for dance. We know it to be wonderful for opera - the acoustics alone set it apart. But the spare character of the auditorium focusses the audience on quality dance to no less effect.
And speaking of acoustics, let us not forget the part played by the Chicago Sinfonietta in this afternoon's delights. And there were particularly striking contributions from the Sinfonietta's concertmaster, Paul Zafer, who demonstrated big time the depth of Chicago's pool of musicians outside the confines of the CSO and Lyric Opera. This was really gorgeous playing.
So we are looking forward to a return trip tomorrow.
