Well I hope that the soap of Dallas Opera will come to an end with the appointment of George Steel of the Miller Theater at Columbia University as General Director. He will have a tough row to hoe given the experience of his two outstandingly capable predecessors, Anthony Whitworth Jones and Karen Stone, each of whom had difficulty with the evidently far from easy Dallas environment. But he is reputed to be an outstandingly successful fundraiser. He is also known as a hugely knowledgeable musician and opera lover, and as an extremely creative producer as well as. Dallas is not known for responding too enthusiastically to that - at least in the opera field. So we shall see, and we wish him well.
Lucky man - he has this brand new opera house to open next year. And designed by the great and good Norman Foster.
