Gerard Mortier duly delivered his keynote speech this morning to a full house, and it should be available on the Opera America Website for you all to enjoy. It is not there yet as I write this but it should be available soon so check back from time to time - there will be a link to it. Do not miss it!
Day Two of the America Speaks process went ahead without incident. I am beginning to wonder how this will turn out. There is less than 100% participation but given the density of the programming I suppose this is no surprise.
The highlight of the day so far was a terrific lecture at noon by Jim Collins - both invigorating and encouraging, and he is a great entertainer as well. We were in the palm of his hand for an hour. And there were a good three thousand there. You can hear what he had to say by going here. All good stuff.
And this afternoon there was a short press conference with Dana Gioia to announce details of the new NEA Opera Honors. The ceremony takes place on October 31 in Washington and our Fall board meeting is scheduled to coincide. The recipients are a pretty distinguished lot by any standards and how excellent that opera itself is being recognized in this way - up there with the Jazz Masters!
And so this evening we all go three thousand feet further up the mountain to Central City.
